Government Home Improvement Grant in 2026 (10 Programs to Know)

Government home improvement grants can help pay for repairs, safety fixes, accessibility upgrades, and energy-saving improvements. Grants are different from loans because they usually do not need to be paid back—as long as you follow the program rules.

These programs are not available to everyone. Each one has specific requirements, and the money must be used only for approved repairs or upgrades.

Many of the best-known federal programs are limited (for example, USDA and VA programs), and additional help may be available through state, county, city, or nonprofit programs.

Below are 10 major government programs for 2026.

USDA Section 504 Home Repair Program

Helps very-low-income homeowners in eligible rural areas pay for needed repairs and safety fixes. Offers loans, and grants for qualifying older adults (62+).

VA Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant

Helps eligible veterans with certain service-connected disabilities build, buy, or remodel a home to improve accessibility and independent living.

VA Special Home Adaptation (SHA) Grant

Helps eligible veterans with certain service-connected disabilities pay for home modifications (often smaller-scale than SAH), including updatesthat improve access and safety.

VA Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) Grant

Helps eligible veterans adapt a family member’s home when the veteran is temporarily living there and needs accessibility modifications.

FEMA Housing Assistance (Financial) — Repairs/Temporary Housing (Disaster-Related)

After a federally declared disaster, FEMA may provide money for temporary housing and certain home repairs not covered by insurance.

FEMA Direct Housing Assistance (Disaster-Related)

In some disasters, FEMA may provide temporary housing directly (such as temporary units or other housing solutions) when rentals aren’t available or aren’t safe.

FEMA Other Needs Assistance (ONA) — Personal Property (Disaster-Related)

Helps cover essential needs after a disaster, which can include replacing critical household items (not a home repair grant, but related support).

LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program)

Helps eligible households pay heating/cooling bills and avoid utility shutoffs. (Usually not for remodeling, but it can reduce energy hardship.)

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

Helps eligible households reduce energy costs through upgrades like insulation, air sealing, and heating/cooling improvements. Often available to both homeowners and renters (with permission).

Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) / Community Action Agencies (Local Help)

CSBG funds local agencies that may offer housing-related support, emergency repairs, or referrals—availability varies by area.

Many grants have detailed rules, and applications can be rejected if information is missing or incorrect.

Be prepared to provide documents showing things like home ownership, income, location, damage (for disasters), or disability status (for VA programs).
