New York Stimulus Payment: Who Gets a Star Check in 2025?

In New York state, homeowners might get some help with their property taxes through the Star program. This week, the state started sending out stimulus checks, which are part of a tax credit system under the STAR program.

Originally, the STAR program allowed homeowners to get a direct cut on their school tax bills. Recently, though, it has changed into a credit system. Now, instead of getting an immediate discount, homeowners have to pay their taxes first and then receive a check from the state.

To find out when these checks are mailed, homeowners can use an online tool provided by the state's Department of Taxation and Finance. This tool also shows the schedule for when these checks will be sent, which varies depending on where you live.
 

The STAR program offers two types of help:

 
  1. STAR Credit: If you have signed up for this, you'll get a STAR check each year (or can opt for a direct deposit). This helps pay your school taxes. You qualify if you:
    • Own your home,
    • It's your main living place,
    • Combined income of you and your spouse is $500,000 or less.
  2. STAR Exemption: If you've been getting this since 2015, you can continue to use it as long as you remain eligible. It directly reduces your school tax bill.
 

Who Qualifies?


To get a STAR check, your home must be your primary residence and your income should be under $500,000.
 
  • Basic STAR: No age limit, and your income must be $500,000 or below.
  • Enhanced STAR: At least one homeowner must be 65 or older. For 2025, your income should be $107,300 or lower, but in 2026, it goes up to $110,750.

In summary, New York homeowners with an income of less than $500,000 may qualify for a tax credit to help with school taxes. You can check online to see when and if you are due to receive this benefit.
