If you are a renter or homeowner struggling to keep your heat on this winter, help is available. Low-income households can now apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) to prevent their utility services from being shut off.

The winter assistance window is open now and runs through March 31.

Who Qualifies for Help?

To be eligible for this program, your household income must be at or below 175% of the federal poverty level. For example:

  • Single person: Income must be $27,387.50 or less.
  • Family of four: Income must be $56,262.50 or less.

(Note: Families with nine or more members follow different income rules based on the state median).

When Can You Apply?

You can request aid if you are facing a "heating crisis," which includes:

  1. Receiving a disconnection notice for your gas or electric.
  2. Having less than a 25% supply of bulk fuel (like propane or oil).
  3. Having a heating unit that is broken or not working.
  4. Needing to start, restore, or transfer energy service to a new home.

How Much Assistance is Available?

The amount of money provided depends on how you heat your home:

  • Electric or Natural Gas: Up to $175 (for regulated utilities) or $750 (for unregulated utilities).
  • Bulk Fuel (Propane, Fuel Oil, Kerosene): Up to $1,200.
  • Coal or Wood: Up to $600.
  • Heating Unit Repairs: Up to $1,500 to fix or replace a broken furnace.

What Documents Do You Need?

When you apply, make sure you have the following ready for everyone living in your home:

  • Proof of Income: Total income for the primary applicant and anyone 18 or older.
  • Social Security Numbers: For every member of the household.
  • Recent Bills: Your most recent gas and electric statements.
  • Proof of Citizenship: Required for all household members.
  • For Furnace Repairs: If you need a heater fixed, you must provide a written estimate or invoice from a professional heating technician.

Looking Ahead

While the current program focuses on winter heating, a separate Summer Crisis Program will be available from July 1 through September 30 for help with cooling costs.
